You can be classified as a domestic student if you are:

  • A New Zealand citizen (including citizens of the Cook Islands, Tokelau, and Niue), or
  • A holder of a New Zealand residence class visa granted under the Immigration Act 2009, residing and studying in New Zealand, or
  • An Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia, residing and studying in New Zealand

To gain admission to the University of Otago as a domestic student, you will need to apply through the University's online enrolment system (eVision) and meet the University Entrance standard (or equivalent). If you gained University Entrance outside of New Zealand, you are still welcome to apply to study here.

The application process generally involves:

  • Choosing your intended major subject. While this may feel like a significant decision, you can change your major later if needed
  • Reviewing the subject page to see which qualifications are available for that subject
  • Selecting a bachelors' degree. If this is your first university qualification, a bachelors' degree is usually the appropriate option
  • Creating an eVision account (or logging in if you already have one) and following the on-screen instructions to complete and submit your application

If you already hold a degree, you may wish to explore postgraduate qualification options instead.

If your last two years of secondary school were not taught in English, or English is not your first language, you will need to show evidence of English language proficiency. You can provide official copies of relevant transcripts and/or certificates once you have submitted your application.

Research your study options before you start. You will need to consider:
