To open a bank account in New Zealand, ask at any New Zealand bank about their 'student account'. You will need to provide:

  • Identification (ID), e.g. passport
  • Your student visa
  • Your offer of place from the University of Otago
  • Evidence of your current address – International Student Support can help with providing this

It is recommended that you enquire with a bank directly about regulations for opening bank accounts for temporary visa holders. Most banks will require you to have a visa that is valid for six months or more. The bank will have to collect information about your tax residency and will ask you to complete a form. This is to comply with international banking rules, and you must complete this form truthfully.

You may wish to obtain an IRD number – you can give this to your bank at any stage. An IRD number is often required if you plan to work in New Zealand or earn taxable income. You can apply for an IRD number in the following ways:

  • In person at an AA Driver Licensing Agent: you can complete the application form and take the required primary identification documents to your local AA agent, who will submit your application to Inland Revenue on your behalf
  • Online through the Inland Revenue website: you can complete the form online; however, you will still need to visit an AA Driver Licensing Agent within 60 days with your registration confirmation number and original identification documents to be verified

You can update your IRD number in eVision. Refer to the related article: Add or update my IRD number in eVision
